Positive Parenting Program

Equipping guardians with practical, non-violent parenting skills to build stronger, safer relationships with the children in their care.

Every child deserves a loving family, and that starts with the adults raising them having the tools to parent well, especially under pressure. Our Positive Parenting Program brings guardians together for structured, practical training on child-centered discipline, communication, and family relationships, moving away from punitive or harsh approaches and toward methods that build trust rather than fear.

At the heart of our curriculum is the STEP model, a simple, repeatable framework guardians can use in real moments of conflict: Say the problem, Think of solutions, Explore risks, and Pick the best solution. Rather than reacting in anger or defaulting to punishment, guardians learn to walk through a real decision-making process with their children, treating discipline as a teaching moment rather than a power struggle. Alongside STEP, sessions cover building strong and secure attachments, healthy family relationships, caring for oneself as a caregiver (since a depleted guardian struggles to parent well), and positive communication between parents and children.

Sessions are facilitated in small groups, allowing space for real conversation, guardians sharing genuine struggles, asking questions, and learning from each other's experiences, not just receiving a lecture. Many of the guardians who attend are already connected to our other programs, raising children who receive support through Education, Health, or our Family & Community Strengthening work, so this program reinforces and strengthens the stability those other efforts are trying to build.

We believe that supporting a child well means supporting the adult raising them just as seriously. A guardian equipped with patience, practical tools, and a genuine sense of community is far better positioned to provide the safe, loving home every child needs, and that ripple effect reaches every child in that household, not just the ones directly enrolled in our programs.

Key Activities:

  • Facilitated guardian workshops using the STEP problem-solving framework
  • Sessions on building strong and secure parent-child attachments
  • Training on positive, non-violent communication between guardians and children
  • Group discussions on family relationships and healthy conflict resolution
  • Guidance on caregiver self-care and managing the pressures of parenting
  • Peer support spaces where guardians share experiences and learn from one another

Expected Outcomes:

  • Guardians equipped with practical, non-punitive discipline strategies they can apply at home
  • Stronger, more secure relationships between guardians and children
  • Reduced reliance on harsh or punitive discipline within participating households
  • Increased guardian confidence and reduced caregiver stress
  • A growing peer network of guardians supporting one another beyond the workshop itself
  • Improved outcomes for children across our other programs, as their home environment becomes more stable and supportive
