Supporting the guardians and families raising our children, because a stable home is the best protection a child can have.
A child's wellbeing is rarely just about the child alone, it's tied directly to the stability of the household around them. A guardian struggling to put food on the table, keep up with rent, or manage a crisis alone is a household under strain, and that strain almost always reaches the children in it. The Family & Community Strengthening Program exists because we believe the most effective way to protect a child long-term is to strengthen the family holding them.
Rather than working with children in isolation, this program invests directly in the families and guardians caring for them. Our table-banking groups bring guardians together into small savings and loan circles, giving families access to capital they'd otherwise never reach, whether to start a small income-generating activity, cover an emergency, or simply build a savings cushion for the first time. These groups often become more than financial tools; they become genuine support networks, guardians leaning on each other through shared experience, not just shared savings.
Alongside financial support, we run parenting workshops covering practical, non-punitive discipline strategies, healthy communication, and building secure attachments with children, work that connects directly with our Positive Parenting Program. For households facing acute crisis, whether a sudden loss of income, a health emergency, or a family breakdown, we provide case-by-case assistance, assessed individually rather than through a rigid, one-size-fits-all response, because every family's circumstances are different.
We also see this program as central to prevention. Many of the children who eventually need residential care or formal child protection intervention come from households that were under strain long before a crisis point was reached. By reaching families earlier, before things break down entirely, we aim to keep more children in stable, loving homes with their own families, reducing the need for institutional care altogether and reserving it for the situations that genuinely require it.
This work also strengthens the wider community, not just individual households. A neighborhood where guardians support each other, share resources, and look out for one another's children is a safer, more resilient community for every child in it, not only the ones directly enrolled in our programs.
Key Activities:
- Facilitating table-banking and small savings/loan groups for guardian households
- Running parenting workshops on positive discipline, communication, and attachment
- Providing individualized, case-by-case support for families in acute crisis
- Connecting families to relevant Heaven's Home programs (Education, Health, Positive Parenting) as needs arise
- Building peer support networks among guardians within the same community
- Monitoring household stability over time to identify families needing additional support before crisis hits
