Back to School 2026: 120 Children Head Into the New Term Ready to Learn

The start of a new school term should be an exciting moment for every child. But for many families we work with, it's also a moment of quiet worry, will there be enough for a uniform, for exercise books, for the basic things a classroom requires?

This January, thanks to the generosity of our donors and community partners, that worry was lifted for 120 children across our partner schools. Through our annual Back to School drive, run under our Education Support Program, we distributed uniforms, exercise books, pens, and shoes to children identified as at risk of starting the term without them.

"I was so relieved," said one guardian, whose two children received full uniform sets and supplies through the drive. "Every January is hard for us. This year, my children didn't have to feel different from their classmates on the first day."

How the drive comes together

Behind each uniform and each stack of books is weeks of quiet preparation. Our team begins reaching out to partner schools as early as November, working with head teachers and class teachers to identify children most at risk of starting the term without basic supplies, often the same children our Education Support Program has been walking alongside all year. We cross-check these lists against family circumstances already known to our case workers, so support reaches the households that need it most, not just the loudest requests.

Once the list is finalized, our team negotiates bulk pricing with local suppliers and tailors, stretching every shilling donated as far as it can go. This term, that meant securing uniforms for roughly 15% below standard retail pricing, savings that let us support several additional children beyond our original target.

Two days, dozens of hands

Distribution itself happened over two days at our community center, with volunteers sorting sizes, matching orders to individual children, and helping guardians collect everything ahead of the first day of term. What could have been a purely logistical exercise became something warmer, volunteers spent time with children trying on uniforms for the first time, and several guardians stayed to chat, ask questions about our other programs, and, in a few cases, request a follow-up visit from our case management team.

That's not incidental. Back to School isn't just a supply drive, it's often the first real touchpoint between a family and the rest of what Heaven's Home offers. A guardian who comes in for a uniform this January may be the same guardian we're supporting through our Family & Community Strengthening program by mid-year.

What made it possible

This term's drive was funded by a combination of individual donor contributions, a partnership with a local business that covered a portion of the stationery costs, and in-kind support from a handful of families who donated gently used uniforms in good condition. Every contribution, large or small, went directly toward getting a child into their classroom prepared and confident.

Looking ahead

We're already turning our attention to the May term, and to two specific goals: reaching more children than this round, and building a small reserve fund so future drives don't depend entirely on last-minute fundraising each time January or May approaches. If this term is any indication, sustained community support makes both of those goals realistic.

For the 120 children who started this term with everything they needed, the impact is immediate and visible. But the deeper hope behind this project is longer-term: that a child who isn't worrying about whether they belong in the classroom is a child who's free to focus on what actually matters, learning, growing, and building the future ahead of them.
